Going for a walk in the woods? Be sure you know proper hiking etiquette

hikingOne of the reasons people fall in love with Oregon is for our abundance of great hiking trails throughout the state’s forests and parks. With so many taking advantage of the outdoors, it’s important to keep in mind proper hiking etiquette for fellow hikers so everyone can enjoy the Oregon nature.

The Oregonian’s Jaime Hale offers these tips to enjoy the trailheads responsibly:

Do:

  1. Know the right way
  2. Step aside to let people pass
  3. Be aware of your surroundings
  4. Be mindful of your dogs
  5. Be nice to fellow hikers

Don’t:

  1. Leave the trail
  2. Leave a trace with litter
  3. Bring your music
  4. Ignore trail closures
  5. Trespass on private property

When you see a trail closure, it’s probably for your safety. Crossing into closed areas could lead to an injury or require rescue. This may extend the closure or even lead to stricter closures in the future, affecting everyone.

These simple suggestions will help us all better enjoy the Oregon trails, whether for exercise or a contemplative walk.

We look forward to seeing you out there!
